Learn more about Dell PowerEdge T320 memory

What Dell PowerEdge T320 DIMM type is supported?

LRDIMM, RDIMM and UDIMM

Why are there various DIMM types supported?

Factory configured T320 systems often have smaller, less expensive modules. As more memory is required different density and technologies are needed. DIMM type mixing is never recommended.

What is a registered memory module?

Registered DIMM memory modules have a register component between the DRAM modules and the motherboard memory controller. When manufactured as a dual in-line memory module (DIMM), a registered memory module is called an RDIMM.

What is a load reduced memory module?

Load reduced memory module technology uses a distributed data buffer to improve bandwidth efficiencies when scaling to higher capacities and speed on enterprise server systems. All LRDIMMs are registered but not all RDIMMs are LRDIMMs. LRDIMM or load-reduced DIMMs are (used in enterprise servers) support highest density modules and contain a memory buffer (MB) component usually made by IDT or Montage. The memory buffer minimizes the load on the server memory bus. LRDIMMs are commonly used to maximize Dell PowerEdge T320.

What is an unbuffered memory module?

Unbuffered, non-registered DIMM memory modules have no buffer/register component between the DRAM modules and the motherboard memory controller.

What Dell PowerEdge T320 memory speed is supported?

DDR3-1066, DDR3-1333, DDR3-1600 and DDR3-1866

Why may there be various speeds of Dell PowerEdge T320 memory?

Some servers often have various configurations and versions. If you are unsure what you need, please refer to your T320 manual or data sheet. If you need tech support, please contact us.

General DIMM population guideline for Dell PowerEdge T320 upgrade to consider.

Some may or may not apply.

  • Do not mix DIMM LRDIMM, RDIMM and UDIMM types.
  • If mixing memory speeds, all 6 DIMMs run at the lowest DDR3-1066 bus frequency.
  • Install DIMMs starting furthest from the processor.
  • Do not install DIMMs if the corresponding processor is not installed.
  • If only one processor is installed in a two CPU system, only half of the DIMM slots are available.
  • To maximize performance, balance the total memory capacity between all installed processors.
  • It is not required, but it is recommended to load the channels similarly if possible.

Why are there so many Dell PowerEdge T320 upgrade options?

IT buyers come from all walks of life. Some purchase by OEM part number. Some purchase by original module part number. Our goal is to give you confidence when purchasing Dell PowerEdge T320 upgrades. All modules listed are qualified to work in your Dell PowerEdge T320.
